The phrase “affordable housing” has come to mean a variety of things. For the purposes of this Coalition, it only makes sense to talk about affordability in terms of income.
- This is especially true for individuals and families who depend solely on wages for their income.
- They do not have inherited wealth, money from family members, stocks, equity from housing payments, or significant savings.
- They often live paycheck to paycheck.
- This is true for many, many people—even in a relatively affluent community like Edwardsville.
To help show the extensive need for affordable local housing, we plan to make a chart like the one below that reflects wages and housing costs in Edwardsville. This chart is from the publication Working Doesn’t Always Pay For A Home, from the Family Housing Fund of Minneapolis, MN.
